Classes and Instructional Trips

 

 

If you want to become a skilled, self-sufficient paddler and be able to rent traditional sea kayaks from Sea Trek or any other outfitter, jump into our Introductory Class. Our instructors are excellent and the classes are small and intimate. Our class series will take you as far as you want to go. Please feel free to call us with any questions.

Sausalito Introductory Class
This class will give you the skills and confidence you need to get on the water and start paddling on your own. The class begins with an hour of on-land demonstrations featuring boat design, paddling technique, and rescue skills. Then, you'll get on the water and begin working on what you've just learned. You'll be getting wet as you learn an easy "wet exit," and how to rescue yourself and your fellow paddlers. After lunch, a discussion of the dynamics of tides and weather allows you to begin planning your own trips in Richardson Bay. You'll take a short trip around the Sausalito waterfront to practice your paddling. After Sea Trek's Introductory Class you'll be ready to paddle in calm waters the world over.

Time: 8:45am-4pm every Saturday, and Sunday.
Cost: $110
includes wetsuit, paddle jacket, and all your kayaking equipment (does not include lunch).

Advanced Paddling Class
Continue on your journey to learning the skills necessary for a confident and safe paddle to Angel Island! Learn the boat maneuvering skills of edging and push your ability to lean your boat. Extend your bracing abilities and review self and assited rescues as well as fine-tune your paddle strokes. This is a 4 hour class.

Prerequisite: Sausalito Intro within the last 3 months.


Angel Island Skills Class
Open your paddling world to Angel Island and beyond.
The Angel Island Skills class takes you across turbulent Raccoon Straits to Angel Island. You'll take the skills learned in the Sausalito Intro and Advanced Paddling classes and up the ante. We pick the wildest day on The Bay each month to practice our paddling techniques, braces, rescues, navigational techniques as well as surf landing and launching to prepare you for more challenging excursions. Be prepared for a big day. You'll be paddling a minimum of 6 miles in strong currents
and, often, strong winds.


Time: 8:30-4 pm once each month March through November.

Cost: $130 ($110.50 with Instructional Package) includes wetsuit,
paddle jacket, and all your equipment (does not include lunch).
Location: Sea Trek in Sausalito.

Sea Trek's Instructional Sea Kayaking Book, "First Strokes." Written by Head Instructor, Mitch Powers, "First Strokes" is an effective learning tool to refresh and reinforce kayaking skills taught in Sea Trek's basic skills classes. This easy to read 100 page book includes over 40-photo-illustrations and covers everything from kayaking equipment, boat handling, strokes and rescues to reading the tidelog, trip planning, safety issues, and places out of the area to go kayaking.

Roll Class
Start your path to expanding your paddling possibilites!
A solid ability to self-rescue backs up the best paddler. One of the best self-rescue skills a kayaker can have is the ability to do an Eskimo Roll - where you can turn yourself all the way around. In this 2-hour class you'll begin with basic water-bracing techniques, and build towards a successful kayak roll. Various rolls will be introduced and discussed to allow the option for
practicing on your own.
Time: 2-4pm.
Cost: $65 ($55.25 with Instructional Package) includes wetsuit, paddle jacket and all your equipment.

Prerequisite: Sausalito Intro


 

Surf Zone
This class is designed to improve on the skills you have learned from the Introduction to Sea Kayaking class. We'll introduce you to the surf zone at Surfer's Beach in Half Moon Bay and teach you the fundamentals of how waves form and break. We'll focus on good judgment as well as launching and landing techniques. We'll review basic strokes and introduce you to more advanced ones to tune your technique and set you up to safely practice on your own or with your friends. This class is physically challenging, but a lot of fun.
Please bring a lunch, a sun hat, sun block, plenty of water, and a change of warm clothing. (We run this class in conjunction with our partner, Half Moon Bay Kayaks.)

Golden Gate Skills Class
Prepare yourself for the ultimate paddling experience - outside the Gate and the Pacific coast. We'll begin at Horseshoe Cove beneath the north tower of the Golden Gate Bridge where our first lesson will teach you how to paddle in the Gate's infamous currents. We'll cover paddling in strong currents, and the dynamics of eddies. Paddling to Point Bonita and the open coast will take us through rock gardens, and past sea caves and arches. A surf landing puts us at our lunch spot after practicing both T and self-rescue techniques along the coast. We'll be
paddling a minimum of 6-8 miles in this class.

Time: 8:30am-3:30 pm, once each month July through October

Kayak Surfing
What sport is easier than surfing on a surf board and can be learned in a matter of hours rather than weeks? Kayak surfing!

Sea Trek offers a a class to take the beginner from side surfing a wave to spins and back surfing and all on open-deck kayaks. We'll learn in the playful waves near Pillar Point Harbor where these easy-on, easy-off boats allow you to learn how to brace yourself, carve turns, and paddle through the surf without the fear of having to do a rescue in the surf - you just hop back on! Knowing how to roll is not necessary. You'll be out and catching waves faster than you could imagine!

We'll focus on paddling techniques, maneuvering, bracing, self-rescues with grace and finally side surfing in gentle waves. We'll learn surfing etiquette, wave synamics and how to conserve your energy as you catch our first wave. We'll then begin to learn how to control your ride with turns and how to read a wave to give you the longest ride possible.

Time: 8:30am-2:30 pm (see calendar for dates).

Private class: $160 midweek, $240 weekend. Four hours.

Private Lessons
Learn kayaking skills at your own pace and on your own schedule. Sea Trek's four-hour private lesson program can accommodate you and your friends on your schedule. Work one-on-one with an instructor on specific skills, or cover the entire curriculum of our introductory course.

Private Lesson's offered seven days a week.

Instructional Trips -
Yellow Bluff Rip Class

Sea Trek's location in Sausalito is considered world class because we have the protection of Richardson Bay for intital exploration and then within an hour's paddle we can be out the Gate or over to Angel Island experiencing conditions that will challenge any skill level of paddler.

The Instructional Trips are designed to give motivated paddlers a look at the expansive playground that awaits to be explored from the put-in at Schoonmaker Pt. The idea is to have fun and the opportunity to assess your skills in different condtions with professional backup before heading out on your own. There are people that paddle 50 times a year from our beach and come back elated every time. It is always different and you can usually find conditons to suit your mood. We hope you will join us.

 

Yellow Bluff Rip Class

We'll paddle past downtown Sausalito enroute to Yellow Bluff Point. This paddle is timed for rocking ebb tides at Yellow Bluff that create standing waves. When conditions are right it's a great place to surf and work on rough water skills.

Prerequisite: Intro, Advanced Paddle, Angel Island Skills classes and good paddling endurance.
Time: Saturday, Sept. 17. Times varies due to currents.
Cost: $65

Angel Island Instructional Crossing

Paddling to Angel Island from Sausalito is the 'classic' trip. We'll land at a beach on the west side for lunch. We'll discuss ranging and ferry angles while gaining experience in deep channel crossings, riptides and more challenging waters.
Prerequisites: Intro, Advanced Paddle and good paddling endurance
Dates : July 16, Oct. 9
Time: 9 am - 2:30pm
Cost: $70

Gate N' Back

Enjoy world class views as we paddle towards the Golden Gate Bridge from Sea Trek's beach and then back. You'll have fabulous views of Angel Island, the San Francisco skyline and of course the Bridge. This trip gets you out of Richardson Bay passing downtown Sausalito en route to the Gate. Paddling distance is approximately 5-6 miles roundtrip.

Prerequisites: Beginners welcome (physically active lifestyle recommended)
Dates : See schedule or create your own custom trip (6 people or more)
Time: 9 am - 1pm
Cost: $75
Location: Sea Trek in Sausalito

Angel Island Overnight

Don't miss this. We've reserved the kayak campsite on the Island for this fun overnight trip. This trip is suitable for beginners who lead a physically active lifestyle. Beginners will be in double kayaks and those who have taken advanced classes and rough water rescues may elect to paddle a single.

We'll paddle to the Island with an option to circumnavigate, then take an afternoon hike before settling in for drinks and dinner. A short post dinner hike takes us up to an overlook with incredible views of the Golden Gate and the city night lights. The following morning after a leisurely breakfast we pack up and head back to Sea Trek.

Prerequisites: Beginners welcome but should lead an "active" lifestyle.
Dates July 14 and July 28, 2007
Time: Noon first day to 10:30 am the second day
Cost: $140 (Potluck dinner-we'll discuss a menu plan before the event)
Location: Sea Trek in Sausalito
Included: Sea Trek to supply campsite, guides, all kayaking gear, dry bags, general commissary and breakfast.
