Take the ferry across Racoon Straits to the "Jewel of the Bay" and then kayak the Island's rugged coastline. The kids will be eyeball to eyeball with harbor seals, and cormorants, and see spectacular views of the City and Golden Gate. This trip is ideal for a first time kayaking experience.

Trip Details

  • Sea Trek's staff will pace the trip to accommodate the kids.
  • Scheduled ferries leave from Tiburon at 10 a.m or from Pier 41 in San Francisco at 9:30am.
  • When the ferry docks you will see our boats on the beach at Ayala Cove. Walk over and we will meet you there.
  • One child can go in a double with an adult.
  • All trips begin and end at the ferry landing in Ayala Cove.
  • We'll paddle along the shores of the protected east side of the island. Our route may include the Chinese Immigration Station or even beyond to expansive Quarry Beach.
  • Total trip distance: 3.5 miles.
  • Sea Trek has the necessary equipment including lifejackets and lightweight paddles for children.

Angel Island Fascinating Facts:

  • The island is approximately 5.5 miles in circumference.
  • The highest point is Mt. Livermore - at 780 feet the park is named for Caroline Livermore who is responsible for much of the open space in southern Marin County.
  • The island has been used as a Coastal Miwok village site, a whalers and pirates hideout, and a ranch for raising cattle.
  • It was a military base during the Civil War, and the Spanish American war and a military induction center during World War I. You can still see the abandoned Nike missile installations.

  • Visitor centers are at Ayala Cove and North Fort Garrison near Quarry Beach.
  • Cove Cafes serve food and beverages.
  • Bike rentals are available.
  • Lawn and group B-B-Q space is available.
  • Tram tours of the island are offered often.
Signing up with Sea Trek: Please make trip reservations early as they fill up quickly. All Sea Trek events are subject to cancellation due to weather and lack of paddlers. If Sea Trek cancels at any time, or if you cancel one week or more prior to your trip, there is no charge. If you cancel within a week of your trip, you will be charged the full amount. There is no refund, however you may have someone else take your place if you choose. We are happy to reschedule you for another trip this year, for an additional $25 per person. Sorry, there is no refund or credit for no shows.
