"I took this trip on the recommendation of one your staff when finding out about kayaking options and I wanted to express my gratitude. The clarity of the water and the tranquil setting far exceeded my expectations. Your staff's professionalism and naturalist knowledge was wonderful. It was one of the loveliest days of my life."

Trip Details

  • Our trip begins at historic Drake's Bay Oyster Farm on your way to the Point Reyes Lighthouse. See map.
  • Depending on weather and the desires of the group we either paddle into Home Bay, one of the first bays of Drakes Estero, past white pelicans, eel grass beds, bat rays, and leopard sharks; or we paddle to the mouth of the Estero past a major harbor seal hang-out, and the expansive white sand of Drakes Beach (yes, we can stop there.)

Drakes Estero Fascinating Facts:

  • Over 500 harbor seal pups are born in Drakes Estero each year.
  • Drakes Bay Oyster Farm, (formerly Johnson's Oysters) has been operating since the 1960s.
  • Japanese oysters are grown here because they grow faster and bigger than native California oysters.
  • Oysters are spawned in a laboratory and young oysters are imported into the Estero to be harvested in two to three years.
  • Flat-bottomed schooners once transported boxes of butter and other ranch products to San Francisco from Drakes Estero.
  • Sir Francis Drake, the intrepid explorer, is believed to have beached his boat for repairs in 1579 in this area, and left a plaque to commemorate his landing. A replica is posted on a beach near the Estero mouth.
