"I thought I knew the Marin Headlands well until I went on the coastal paddle. There is so much more to see from the water. It was a fantastic experience, well worth repeating." Peter Griffes

There are caves along our coast that are only accessible by sea kayak.

California Coast Fascinating Facts:

  • San Francisco Bay was discovered in 1769 by Captain Portola.
  • At the peak of the ice age the ocean at the Golden Gate was as much as 400 feet lower - one could have walked to the Farallon Islands.
  • The name "Golden Gate" was coined in 1846 by Captain John C. Fremont, a couple of years before gold was found and the rush began. The entrance to the Bay reminded Fremont of the Golden Horn of the Bosporus, that narrow passage at the eastern end of Mediterranean Sea.
  • The Golden Gate is a drowned river channel. Runoff combined with rising waters from glacial melting flooded the Bay.
  • The Golden Gate bridge was designed by Joseph Straus, who wrote his graduating thesis on the possibility of bridging the Bering Strait.
  • The central span of the Bridge is able to arch 16 feet and to withstand hurricane winds it can flex sideways as much as 27 feet.
  • It is 216 feet up to the platform from the water.
