Sausalito
and Richardson Bay Fascinating Facts:
-
Sausalito was a hotbed of bootlegging activity during
the Prohibition Era. Its proximity to the Golden Gate
and the frequent covering of thick fog which cut it
off from the rest of the Bay made it a natural haven
for rum-runners.
- William
Randolph Hearst - Willie as his mother called him
- once cruised the waters of Sausalito in a yacht
that ran on naptha. While cruising, the boat poured
out plumes of flames, and threatened to blow up the
entire crew.
-
Richardson Bay is named for William Richardson, a
British sailor who jumped ship to marry the daughter
of the San Francisco Presidio's commandant.
-
Sausalito's houseboat community was originally established
by artists, philosophers, and musicians such as Alan
Watts, Jean Varda, Aldous Huxley, Allen Ginsberg,
Duke Ellington and Shel Silverstein.
-
At one time developers toyed with the idea of filling
Richardson Bay to create a Coney Island-style amusement
park and an airport.
