Itinerary:
Day 1: We meet at Sea Trek in Sausalito where the adventurers get to know each other and prepare for the week's explorations. At 10 we'll be off via van to Heart's Desire Beach at Tomales Bay State Park. We'll familiarize ourselves with our equipment and go over paddling techniques and safety before we head out for our first night of camping under the starts. Weather permitting, we'll launch for a short paddle into the evening to experience the wonder of bioluminescence as it creates tinkerbell sparkles in the wakes of our kayaks.
Day 2: It's an early rise to huevos rancheros for breakfast and the beginning of our adventure exploring Tomales Bay. We'll take a look at charts and tide logs to begin to understand the movements of Tomales Bay and then head off on our first day trip 3 miles away to hike amongst the Tule Elk and explore tidepools and caves of McClure's Beach. That evening we'll be met by a local group of fishermen dedicated to teaching others about the richness and delicate nature of the Bay. With a traditional beach seine net we'll assist them in bringing in a "catch" just feet from shore and seeing the diversity of the undersea life in viewing tanks on shore. Leopard sharks, bat rays, pipefish and more are seen and their life histories explaned as we learn more about our connection to the waters of Tomales Bay.
Day 3-4: We'll be packing all our gear into our kayaks and spend the next two full days exploring Tomales Bay by kayak. Paddling towards the mouth, the waters turn clearer, tidepools are rich with diversity and the hillsides are silhouetted with the forms of the majestic Tule Elk. Coyotes are heard in the evenings and tracks of the night creatures are outlined in the sand. We'll hike to an isolated white sand beach on the Pacific side where abalone shells litter the shore and a sea cave awaits to be explored at low tide. If the conditions are ideal we'll take off on a 7 mile night time paddle to our last campsite with swirls of bioluninescence in the wakes of our kayaks while jet streams light up from the fish beneath us.
Day 5: We'll pack up the kayaks one final time for a paddle back to Heart's Desire to say good-bye to Tomales Bay. We return to Sausalito to unload, clean up, and close camp by savoring the accomplishment of a great and educational adventure among friends.
