This weeklong program is designed to provide the opportunity for newcomers and seasoned paddlers to develop and enhance essential skills for safely leading a variety of sea kayaking trips. You will spend a week kayaking on the exciting and beautiful water of the San Francisco Bay. The immersive program based on Angel Island will present challenging and informative scenarios and classroom sessions. We will review group management strategies and trip planning procedures in both commercial and personal settings. You will emerge as a well-rounded kayak guide with the confidence to lead friends, family, and clients on sea kayaking adventures.

Typical Itinerary

Meet at Sea Trek by 8AM. Students will receive a brief orientation to the Sea Trek operation, review the week’s schedule, and jump into packin for a weeklon camping expedition. Students will learn how to load their kayaks for a multi-day expedition, and how considerations like tide and current affect the planning of a multi-day trip. We will load boats and the skiff. Students will participate in an intro to Sea Kayaking Class that includes lessons on boat design, paddling technique, rescue skills, and a discussion of tides and weather. The class will be conducted on the move and will end at the kayak camp on Angel Island. Students will set camp, cook dinner, and prepare for the rest of the week.

Students will spend the morning back in the boats fine-tuning your paddle strokes and practicing advanced boat-maneuvering skills. You will also have the opportunity to practice self-rescues and assisted rescues. After lunch, we will hold a “classroom” session focused on group management strategies and risk analaysis. After a quick break we will review sample itineraries of Sea Trek trips and classes, so students have an understanding of what sort of work may be available upon course completion.

The day will start with a lesson on navigation, on-the-water hazards, and trip planning. We will then set out on an extended paddle to either the Golden Gate Bridge or Alcatraz. We will practice group management and decision making while on the water. Upon our return to camp we will review Sea Trek Emergency Procedures and review some potential scenarios.

After breakfast we will run a brief introduction to paddleboarding clinic in the calm waters of Ayala Cove, followed by a class on basic boat repair and maintenance. The afternoon will be dedicated to practicing paddle skills and potentially a small roll session.

The final day of the course is dedicated to students completing the Level 3 American Canoe Association Skills Assessment. This is a full day certification which will allow students to test their skills against a nationally recognized standard. We will break camp in the morning and load non-essential gear into the skiff. The assessment will be conducted while on the water around Angel Island and we will paddle back to the Sea Trek office by the end of the day.
