If you’re looking for an incredible overnight adventure within the San Francisco Bay, an Angel Island kayaking trip is the perfect experience. With stunning 360-degree views, rich history, and a peaceful camping experience, this trip is a must for outdoor lovers. Whether you have your own kayaks or need a little extra support, this guide will help you plan a seamless and stress-free adventure.

Why Angel Island?

Angel Island is often called the “Ellis Island of the West” due to its history as an immigration station. It has also served as a military base and even a quarantine station. Today, it’s a state park offering scenic hiking trails, breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco skyline, and a unique opportunity to experience nature and history in one trip. The island is home to diverse wildlife, from deer and raccoons to a variety of seabirds, making it a nature-lover’s dream.

Planning Your Trip: Step by Step

Whether you have your kayak or need to rent, you can enjoy this incredible experience, but there are a few key logistics to plan in advance. Here’s how to make it happen:

1. Plan Your Route & Check the Tides

The San Francisco Bay is famous for its strong currents, and timing is key for a smooth paddle. We recommend launching from Sausalito and paddling across Raccoon Straits to Angel Island. You can launch from here at Sea Trek or from Dumphy Park. To plan a safe and efficient route:

  • Look for a mellow flood or ebb in the morning (ideally less than 2 knots)
  • Mid-morning slack tides are also great for a smooth crossing
  • Check wind conditions and avoid paddling in high winds if possible

2. Secure Your Camping Permit

You’ll need a camping permit to stay overnight on Angel Island. You can reserve your permit through the California State Parks website: ReserveCalifornia.com. We recommend booking early since spots fill up quickly!

3. Gear Transport & Packing Tips

Since you’ll need to bring camping gear, plan to pack light and efficiently. Dry bags are essential to keep your gear protected. If you prefer not to paddle with heavy equipment, you can arrange for a boat escort to transport your gear separately.

4. Safety & Navigation

  • Always wear a PFD (personal flotation device)
  • Carry a marine radio or waterproof phone case for emergency communication
  • Have a navigation plan, and familiarize yourself with the route ahead of time
  • Let someone know your trip itinerary in case of emergencies

5. Enjoying Angel Island

Once you arrive, set up camp at one of the island’s designated sites, many of which offer breathtaking views of the city skyline or the Golden Gate Bridge. Spend the afternoon hiking to Mount Livermore, biking around the island (you can rent ebikes once there), or exploring historic sites like the old immigration station. As the sun sets, enjoy a peaceful evening with panoramic views of the sun peeking beneath the Golden Gate Bridge.
